Video Poker – North Carolina to ban Video Poker

Video Poker players have to hurry if they want to hit the jackpot. Well, at least the players in the state of North Carolina do. While other jurisdictions embrace the popular electronic games, like online video poker and video slot machines, computer-based sweepstakes games at hundreds of North Carolina Internet cafes, business service centers and other places have officially been banned.

As was widely expected, Gov. Beverly Perdue signed a bill Tuesday afternoon that ban the electronic games starting Dec. 1. In early July, the North Carolina legislature agreed to extend the 2006 ban on video poker machines to games that operators say were designed to attract consumers to purchase phone or Internet time. Ban supporters said the games were a way to get around the previous ban. But many video poker operators say the ban will eliminate thousands of jobs.

Perdue’s office had said earlier this month the governor likely would sign the bill into law. There was no bill-signing ceremony.

Rhode Island casino bill controversial

It seems that Rhode Island Governor Don Carcieri is drawing a fine line between casinos and slot parlors. A recent story out of Providence, Rhode Island, is that their governor is leery about a bill already passed by the State’s General Assembly to let two of the state’s slot parlors grow into casinos.

The governor talked on WPRO-AM radio and voiced his concerns. He promised that he and his staff would look at the bill carefully before making a decision to veto it or not which seems a moot point as the vote by the House doesn’t give the Governor that option. The state has two slot parlors located in Lincoln, Rhode Island and another in Newport, Rhode Island. These two slot parlors make up a big part of the state’s budget since they get 60 cents out of each dollar lost on video slots.

The bill makes provision for a vote of approval from the citizens of Rhode Island. The casino would add gaming tables to the video slots parlors. The House passed the bill with a majority of 62 to 12 which makes it veto proof. The Senate passed the bill with a vote of 21 to 14.

Governor Carcieri is concerned about a bill that would effectively take control out of local community leaders in running a casino as opposed to video slots parlors. The Governor further stated that such usurpation of local control would intrude on constitutional rights of a city to control its own activities. Another concern of the Governor’s is that the state’s portion of the monies earned by the new casinos has not been detailed and such ambiguity makes the bill suspicious.

Since a referendum from the people is required to put the bill into force, the Governor has to abide by the will of his citizens.

2008 World Series of Poker

The 2008 World Series of Poker was held at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The series began on May 30, 2008 and featured 55 events. With the exception of the Main Event, all events ended by July 15.

This was the year that the WSOP introduced the “November Nine.” The November Nine are the nine players who make the final table of the Main Event. As soon as the field was narrowed to the nine finalists, play was suspended for four months and resumed in November. The change was introduced at ESPN’s request to allow them to do a same-day Main Event broadcast.

The nine finalists were determined on July 14. The final table was not played until November 9, and it was played at the Penn and Teller Theater rather than the traditional Amazon Room.

Peter Eastgate defeated Ivan Demidov in the final hand of the Main Event to win poker’s most prestigious tournament. At 22 years old, Eastgate became the youngest ever to win the Main Event. He walked away with a $9,152,416 cash prize.
There were 6,844 players in the Main Event, up slightly from the 6,358 that played in 2007. It was still well below the record 8,773 that played in the 2006 Main Event.

One of the most memorable events of the 2008 WSOP was when Justin Phillips eliminated Motoyuki Mabuchi from the Main Event. Mabuchi held quad aces and went all in, only to lose to Phillips’s royal flush. According to broadcaster Lon McEachern, the odds of quad aces and a royal flush being held at the same time are 1 in 2.7 billion.

Gambling in South Africa adds over $4.7 billion to GDP

In South Africa, until 1996, gambling was essentially outlawed. It has become fairly prominent since then and South Africa is now the gaming capital of the African continent. All forms of gambling except horseracing were outlawed by the Gambling Act of 1965. In the Bantustans of Bophuthatswana, Ciskei, Transkei and Venda, casinos started operating in the late 1970s. Illegal casinos progressively became more common, with an estimated 2,000 by 1995. By establishing the National Gambling Act in 1996, the South African government responded to the growing underground nature of gambling. The act instituted a system of licensed casinos and a single national lottery. South Africa’s licensed casino industry was represented by the Casino Association of South Africa (CASA).

The new gambling industry and internet betting was responsible for generating more than $1.5 billion in new investment in all nine provinces in a span of eight years, adding over $4.7 billion to GDP in terms of economic multipliers. Licensed gross gambling revenue as monitored totaled more than $1.7 billion in the 2006/2007 financial year. 86.2 percent of that revenue was derived in casinos.

By the recent economic crisis, South African casinos and online casino were not spared. In the 2009 Survey of Casino Entertainment in South Africa, CASA chairman David Coutts-Trotter, stated, “Declining disposable incomes and nervous consumer confidence have resulted in declining gaming revenues, compounding the challenges facing the casino and leisure sector in a time of increasingly difficult operating conditions.”

Gambling remains very much a part of South Africa’s culture, despite recent lapses in casino revenue. In online gambling, a large percentage of the population also participates, although they sometimes face challenges when trying to wager with South African Rands.

Online Casinos Taking Toll on Land Based Casinos

Online gambling is getting increasingly popular and trend shows that people are making use of both the physical and online gambling business. The question that comes to the mind is whether online gambling is affecting the land bases casinos and institutions.
The first online casino started operations in 1995 and has started a whirlwind effect ever since.
The online casino had been a whirlwind effect ever since it started operations in 1995. Since its emergence it has witnessed intense scrutiny, gone through government panels and regulations. Online gambling casinos were not favored by most states in the US, they rather favored land based casino. Without a license, the United States has a law that says that owning an online casino or gambling related business is an illegal act. Online gambling companies are being forced to move to other nations as no states are currently giving online gaming licenses.
Only 1.5 million is needed to operate and build an online casino business whereas up to 300 million is required to build a land based casino. Online casino just requires 20 people to run whereas a land based casino uses 20,000 employees to run and operate. This made more people to choose online casino resulting in a drop in housing market in Las Vegas. People lost their jobs and were forced to sell their homes or opted foreclosure.
Online casinos and online gambling companies, when were moved out of the country resulted in a dramatic dip in their gambling and licensing fees. This also made land based casinos more expensive because of fees, government regulation and oversight that these casinos conform to.
Online casinos are much more convenient and easy to use but without any doubts, these actions are having a large effect on land based casinos. Online gambling popularity has made land based casinos to change their marketing and business strategies to be able to compete.

New Jersey casinos fined for law violation

In recent days for allowing problem and underage gamblers to gamble on their premises, a series of New Jersey casinos have been fined.

For violating the conditions of the self-exclusion list to gamble voluntarily signed by a man in 2003, two in Atlantic City, Bally’s Atlantic City and Caesar’s Atlantic City, have each been fined $10,000. The man had repeatedly been allowed to gamble in both facilities from 2005 through 2006.

The casinos acted unwittingly as an accomplice in this instance, although the man was on the self-exclusion list and should not have been allowed to gamble. The man had signed up for frequent player and online poker players accounts under seventeen aliases, used different information to acquire the accounts as two of them remained unflagged as a problem gambler. Further, the man’s anonymity as a person on the self-exclusion list is protected by law, disallowing for him to be identified publicly in connection with this issue.

Because of the man’s “intentional deception,” the Gaming Enforcement is allowing the two establishments to keep the $87,000 the man lost while gambling there. Thus, the total profit from this entire affair ended up being around $67,000 for the casinos, despite the slap on the wrist.

Once they lapse under pseudonyms, it’s not uncommon for individuals on self-exclusion lists to attempt to gamble again. However, many feel like that it is an important step in halting the progress of problem gambling among adults in America, even though this is not a perfect system.

Video Poker – Payback percentages

Video poker is rewarding and risk-driven, but its the great payback percentages get many people who love gambling back to the sport. For those uninitiated in video poker rules and payback percentages, we’ll aim to dispel any misconceptions by giving two brief examples of noticing the differences, and how to tell which machines will pay more.

Firstly, they payback will be different for every machine. Always check the payout table first, before drawing any money for a game. Be aware of the disparity and probabilities.

An example of this is a Deuces Wild game, which declares that all twos are wild, while twos are just normal cards in Jacks or Better. So that pay table will probably be a very poor choice because there will be no wild cards. Noting this, you should move to a poker machine with a different pay out table.

Secondly, there are machines with rare high-payout opportunities. These may seem profitable, but in the long run, playing them will only cause you to lose money, expecting an extremely rare combination. The casino managers often correct their machines for higher house profits, if they notice they are losing out…so rule these out, and find a more even set of payback percentages.

Knowing which machines give the better payback can really bring a gambler to a new level of winnings. It’s important to look at payout tables as they may change regularly, depending on the house. When you’re sure about the payback, sit down, enjoy the game.
